Scholarly Discovery

Indexing & Abstracting

Indexing Status Matters

Indexing and abstracting services can differ by journal. PenScholar therefore identifies relevant services at the journal level and only publishes verified indexing information.

Current Indexing Status

A status is shown for a service only where PenScholar has real, verified information.

Verified

The journal has confirmed inclusion in the service.

Pending

An application or evaluation is underway. This does not mean the journal has been accepted.

Not Currently Indexed

The journal is not currently listed in that service.

Not Applicable

The service is not relevant to the journal.

Indexing & Abstracting Services

Verified Indexing Information Will Appear Here

PenScholar will publish indexing and abstracting information as journal records are verified. We do not publish unverified indexing claims.

Indexing, Abstracting & Discovery

These terms are related but not interchangeable.

Indexing

A service maintains structured bibliographic records of, or formal inclusion for, scholarly publications.

Abstracting

A service provides searchable bibliographic information and/or article abstracts.

Discovery

A service helps researchers find scholarly content through search and metadata, without necessarily curating or indexing it.

How We Verify Indexing Information

PenScholar verifies indexing information through authoritative sources where possible, such as a service’s official database directory, its official journal listing, an official ISSN record, or a verified publisher account with that service. A verified record is shown with its verification date and an official source link. Third-party claims, unofficial directories, and informal listings are not treated as proof of indexing.

Why Indexing Is Shown at the Journal Level

Indexing status can differ from one PenScholar journal to another. For that reason, this publisher-wide page does not make blanket indexing claims: each journal displays only its own verified services, and article pages inherit relevant journal metadata rather than repeating publisher-wide claims.

Indexing Distinctions

DOI Registration Is Not the Same as Indexing

Registering a DOI for an article does not, by itself, mean a journal is indexed in a bibliographic database.

Google Scholar Is a Discovery Tool

Scholarly discovery systems operate differently from curated bibliographic databases such as Scopus or Web of Science, and inclusion is not automatic or equivalent.

Open Access Is Not DOAJ Inclusion

Publishing open access does not, by itself, mean a journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals.

Scholarly Discoverability Strategy

Rather than promising future database acceptance, PenScholar is focused on the infrastructure that supports discoverability.

  1. Accurate, complete article and journal metadata
  2. DOI registration for published content
  3. ORCID support for author identification
  4. Structured data across journal, issue, and article pages
  5. Accurate submission metadata for each journal
  6. Search engine discoverability
  7. Repository visibility
  8. Open, well-formed scholarly metadata

Discoverability Starts With Good Metadata

Every PenScholar article is built around a consistent metadata record.

Descriptive Metadata

Article title, author names, affiliations, abstract, and keywords.

Identifiers
